Emma Stone Deadlifted 185 Pounds for New Role

Emma Stone is one of those actresses who can make a total physical transformation look easy, even when it’s majorly far from it. Three short months after looking lean and lithe dancing around Hollywood in “La La Land,” the star had to transform into a champion tennis player for her role as professional tennis star Billie Jean King in “Battle of the Sexes.” How did she pack on 15 pounds of lean muscle in such a short time? With this hardcore strength-training workout designed by trainer Jason Walsh.

Walsh revealed to Glamour that Stone worked out twice a day, joking that she “kind of became a meathead.” Her crazy workouts included pushing around a 200-pound sled, and despite the fact it sounds like absolute torture, he swears the opposite. “Every client I’ve had, including Emma, finds strength training addictive.” He told HelloGiggles earlier this year that she also did hip thrusts and pull-ups, which “kind of became her favorite.” No pain, no gain, right?

Instead of working both sides of the body simultaneously, Walsh is a firm believer in getting his clients stronger with exercise moves that only use one side of the body at a time, such as single-leg squats. “It’s like the way you move in real life,” he explains. “When you’re walking, you’re only using one leg. You’re using your body the way it’s intended to work.”

While many women prefer sticking to doing lots of repetitions using small weights, Walsh had the Academy Award winner lifting big iron. “Emma was good at deadlifts, which are hard,” he says. Just how much weight was the 5'6" actress lifting? By the time he was done with her, Stone was up to 185 pounds — much more than her body weight. Because the main objective was to build his client’s muscles, Walsh made sure Stone was only doing cardio two or three days a week — spending double the amount of time doing strength training. “To build muscle, strength needs to be the foundation of your workouts,” he says. “Keeping your muscles strong makes everything better.” When she did do cardio, she wasn’t exactly strolling on the treadmill. Walsh had her using a hardcore fat-blasting climbing machine called the VersaClimber — the same total-body workout equipment featured at his West Hollywood health club Rise Nation.

As for her diet, Walsh made sure Stone was consuming plenty of protein after her workouts to repair tired muscles. “Recovery is everything when it comes to getting stronger,” he says.
