How to Reset a Brother Laser Printer

Brother produces a line of laser printers designed for use at home or in a business environment. These printers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and each has its own specific set of features, many of which are user-configurable. If certain settings are not providing the desired results, you may find it preferable to reset the setting to its factory default, rather than attempting to make manual adjustments. Different models of Brother printer have different reset procedures, and you may need to experiment with several to find the one that works best with your machine.

Restart And Reset

  1. Set the printer's power switch to the “off” position. Examine the printer cover and confirm that it is securely closed. Trace the power cord to its electrical outlet and confirm that the plug is in place.

  2. Hold down the printer's “go” button, located on the device's control panel. Set the power switch to the “on” position and wait for the printer to begin powering up.

  3. Release the “go” button when the printer's toner, drum and paper indicator lights activate. Wait until the lights turn off before proceeding.

  4. Press the “go” button six times; if the lights activate again, you have successfully reset the printer to its factory defaults.

Menu Reset

  1. Set the printer's power switch to the “on” position and wait for the device to power up completely before proceeding.

  2. Press one of the “+,” “-,” “OK” or “BACK” buttons located on your printer's control panel. Use the “+” or “-” buttons to select the option labeled “Reset Menu.” Press the “SET” button to confirm your selection.

  3. Use the “+” or “-” buttons to select the option labeled “Factory Reset.” Press the “SET” button twice to confirm your selection.

Software Reset

  1. Direct your web browser to brother.com. Click on the menu option labeled “Support,” then click on the link labeled “Drivers & Downloads.” Select the option labeled “Printers” from the pulldown menu.

  2. Select your model of printer and click on the button labeled “View.” Click on the link located in the section labeled “Your Results.” Select your operating system and your preferred language, then click on the button labeled “Search.” Look for a result containing the word “BRAdmin.” Click on the “Information and Download” link, then click on the “Download” button. Save the installation program to your computer.

  3. Launch the installation program and follow the onscreen instructions. Launch the “BRAdmin” program and select the printer you wish to reset. Open the “Control” menu and select the option labeled “Network Configuration.” Input your password when prompted and click on the “OK” button.

  4. Navigate to the tab labeled “Control.” Click on the button labeled “Factory Reset.”

    Tip

Some models of Brother printer allow you to reset individual features on the printer while leaving others unaffected; access the menu as described in the “Menu Reset” section and use the “+” or “-” buttons to select the specific feature you wish to reset. If you are attempting to reset your printer via software and do not know which password to input, try the default password of “access.”
