What to Pair With a Navy Sweater

A navy sweater conjures up all kinds of comforting thoughts like being cozy, sipping hot cocoa, and seeing a wintry wonderland while gazing through a window. However, when you find that creating relaxing outfits with your navy sweater doesn't come quite as naturally as dreaming up warm settings, you just need some simple go-to outfit ideas to get you on your merry way.

Crisp Separates

Think lightweight cotton or linen blends for a navy sweater that you might wear to the beach or on vacation during warmer weather. Women, imagine yourself in a three-quarter-sleeve, V-neck sweater with a boxy fit. Pull on a white cotton, straight-cut skirt that falls a few inches above your knees or slide on a pair of white, straight-leg jeans or chinos. Men, pull on a lightweight cotton navy sweater with a crew neck and a banded hemline with white chinos or linen pants. Both men and women can slide on a pair of brown leather sandals or moccasins for the finishing touch.

Throwback Pieces

Have some fun with your navy sweater by pulling dark denim into the mix for a retro-inspired ensemble. Women, start with a fitted navy sweater with a plunging neckline and pair with dark rinse bell-bottom jeans. This silhouette works well on most body types except apple shapes. Women with apple shapes should select pants with a lower rise to avoid drawing attention to their midsection. Black, brown or beige platform sandals -- preferably with wooden soles -- create a 70's-inspired finish when worn with bell-bottoms and a navy sweater. Men, start with a long-sleeve, polo style sweater in a thin material such as merino wool or cashmere. Complement the sweater with a pair of deep blue, straight-leg jeans and retro-inspired, low-profile sneakers or leather loafers.

Color Contrast

Play around with color to add some interest with your navy sweater. Add and a hint of blue's complementary color, orange, for a high-contrast look. Women, try a navy, cable-knit sweater that hits at mid hip and wear over a pair of medium blue skinny- or straight-leg jeans. Slide your feet into a pair of peach-hued shoes, such as ballet flats or sneakers, for a pop of color. Men, pull on a cable-knit sweater and medium blue, straight-leg jeans, as well. For a bolder look, slide your feet into orange sneakers such as slip-ons or those with a low-profile. Men can also stick with neutral sneakers such as gray or black and add a color pop by wearing an orange T-shirt beneath the sweater, allowing the color to peek out at the neckline.

Prepster Additions

If you lean toward a particularly preppy style, either a crew neck or V-neck navy sweater worn over a white button-front shirt is nearly as classic as it gets. Both men and women can opt for a navy wool sweater with a banded waist. Women can consider a white button-front shirt with a Peter Pan collar for a more feminine take. Men and women can wear the look with a pair of deep navy, toffee-hued or army green pants. Women can also choose a straight-fit skirt that falls to the knees for a preppy vibe. Add a tweed blazer in colors that blend with your sweater for an extra layer. Pop your feet into sand-hued chukka boots or boots with ankle-zip detailing to complete your classic look.
