iPod & Treadmill Walking Workouts
Let's face it -- a regular treadmill routine boosts your health, but it can make your eyes glaze over with boredom. This is where the iPod can assist you in a more ways than one. There is more to using the iPod during exercise than sticking in your headphones and listening to music; you can also access personal trainer podcasts and specialized workout music, much of it for free.
Music lovers out there might know what music works for your exercise routine and the beats that help you keep up your own rhythm. You have probably created your own exercise playlist and timed it to fit your treadmill program. If you don't have time to make your own playlist, turn on Genius in your iTunes account, choose a song you like to exercise to and Genius will create a playlist of songs that match it, or make recommendations for new songs you should download for your exercise playlist.
The Fitness Function
The iPod Nano has a fitness function that incorporates a pedometer to measure your steps on the treadmill and a way of creating workouts to your favorite music. You'll need to enter your height and weight in your iPod; don't forget to update your weight when it changes. Chose the units of measurement you want to use, whether its miles or kilometers. You can also choose to get your information via audio feedback and you can even change the "voice" that you'll hear. You can set distance and calories-burned goals and then select a music playlist, an audio book or a motivational podcast to accompany this particular workout.
The iTunes store is a source of a selection of free music playlists, as well as paid-for music. Search the store for workout music products that provide free playlists set to different heart rates. Some podcasts last for between 30 to 60 minutes and promise high-energy music that has the advantage of providing a fixed tempo for specific types of workouts whether it is walking or running on your treadmill.
