To maintain good physical health, children and adolescents need a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise every day, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This hour of daily activity can include all of the things children normally do, like running, jumping and climbing on playground equipment. To supplement physical activity during inclement weather or spend some active time at home with your child, use exercise DVDs made specifically for children.
Take a Trip to the Zoo
At about 20 minutes long, "Move 'n Groove Kids at the Zoo" is designed for children ages 2 to 5. It uses cartoon animals with real kids and a real instructor on a "visit" to the zoo where the children learn to move like the animals.
Yoga for Kids
For the budding yogi, "Yoga Kids ABCs" teaches young children yoga-style poses, many based on animals and plants. The poses coincide with a letter of the alphabet, so children learn the alphabet and the names of each pose, reinforcing literacy as well as physical activity. This DVD is 28 minutes long.
Work Out With the Family
Fitness guru Denise Austin designed the "Denise Austin's Fit Kids" DVD with two 20-minute workouts: one for 8- to 12-year-olds and one for families to do together. The workouts are energizing and upbeat; the family workout includes exercises that can be done with a partner.
