Cristiano Ronaldo Substituted by Postecoglou: Al-Nassr Comeback

Down 2-0 and reduced to 10 men, Al-Nassr manager Ange Postecoglou pulled captain Cristiano Ronaldo at halftime, then watched his depleted side complete a 3-2 comeback win over Al-Ettifaq yesterday, according to BBC Sport. It was Ronaldo's first start of the season, and the victory kept Al-Nassr's perfect league record intact, extending their unbeaten start to three matches with nine points and top spot in the Saudi Pro League table, according to BBC Sport and Sports Illustrated.

Goalkeeper Bento was sent off in the 12th minute for fouling Mousa Dembélé outside the box, forcing an early reshuffle well before Postecoglou turned to his captain, per Arab News. Ronaldo left the field at the break with a visible, questioning gesture toward the bench, BBC Sport reported.

Why Postecoglou substituted Ronaldo at halftime

Postecoglou replaced Ronaldo with midfielder Abdullah Al-Khaibari at the break. Asked about the call afterward, he emphasized Ronaldo's limited recent playing time and said the team opted for a different approach in the second half: "Everyone knows that Ronaldo hasn't played in a long time. He performed exceptionally well in the first half, and we opted for a different approach," Postecoglou said, via BBC Sport.

That playing-time gap is measurable. Ronaldo had played just 73 minutes for Al-Nassr all season before this start, according to Sports Illustrated. He had, however, been busy internationally: the same report noted he started every match for Portugal at the World Cup earlier this year, playing all but nine minutes before Spain eliminated the team in the round of 16. Postecoglou did not cite the tournament in his own explanation for the substitution; the two facts sit side by side in the reporting without a confirmed link between them.

Postecoglou credited the substitutes broadly rather than detailing what Al-Khaibari changed tactically. "When I made the substitutions, including taking Ronaldo off, I believed the players coming on could make an impact. I came here to help the players, so I'm proud of them because every substitute made a positive contribution," he said, according to Goal.

The trouble started well before Ronaldo's withdrawal. Al-Nassr's goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi was sidelined by injury, which meant Bento started in his place, Goal reported. After a handball by Salem Al-Najdi in Al-Nassr's own half, Al-Ettifaq winger Rayane Messi played a quick free kick to Dembélé, and Bento's foul on him outside the box drew a red card from referee Mohammed Al-Hoish in the 12th minute, according to Arab News. Postecoglou responded by substituting off midfielder Angelo to bring on third-choice goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Otaibi, the same report noted. Al-Nassr played a man short for more than 80 minutes of the match, per Arab News.

Al-Ettifaq doubled their advantage in the 31st minute when Duda beat Al-Otaibi with a long-range strike, according to Arab News, leaving Al-Nassr down 2-0 at the break. Arab News described Ronaldo's opening 45 minutes as difficult for the captain, though Postecoglou's own postmatch comments credited Ronaldo's first-half performance rather than criticizing it.

At halftime, Postecoglou told his players the deficit was not as safe as it looked, since both Al-Ettifaq goals had come from shots, and instructed the team to attack down the wings, according to Goal. The adjustment did not produce immediate results; Al-Ettifaq's lead held for most of the second half, Sportstar reported.

Sadio Mané pulled one back in the 74th minute, finishing a through ball from João Félix after the Portuguese was played in behind the Al-Ettifaq defense, according to Arab News. Three minutes later, Félix's corner found Abdulelah Al-Amri, whose header leveled the score at 2-2, Sports Illustrated reported. Mané then scored the winner in the 90th minute after substitute Sami Al-Najei found him on the shoulder of the Al-Ettifaq defense; the goal was initially flagged offside before a VAR review overturned the call, according to Sportstar and Arab News. All three Al-Nassr goals arrived inside the match's final 16 minutes, well after Ronaldo had already left the field.

The match also doubled as a duel between the Saudi Pro League's two Australian managers, pitting Postecoglou against Al-Ettifaq boss Arthur Papas, Arab News reported.

What Postecoglou's Ronaldo substitution means for Al-Nassr

Ronaldo managed just two shots before his withdrawal, a detail consistent with Postecoglou's explanation that his captain needed managing rather than replacing for cause, according to Arab News. Postecoglou joined Al-Nassr last month, after a 39-day spell in charge of Nottingham Forest ended last October, per BBC Sport.

Postecoglou pushed back on making the substitution the story of the night. "I think there's a bigger story today, and that is that 10 men of Al-Nassr were unbelievable. That's all you should write about," he said, per Sports Illustrated. He credited the turnaround to the players' own drive to get back into the game rather than any single tactical switch, according to Goal.

One win decided by a late Mané brace and two Félix contributions does not establish that removing a veteran captain produces comebacks on a repeatable basis. It shows that in an extreme game state, a man down and two goals behind, Postecoglou chose to replace his captain despite Ronaldo's status, and Al-Nassr went on to win.

What's next for Al-Nassr and Ronaldo

Al-Nassr are next in action against Al-Taawoun on Friday, August 28, according to Sportstar and Sports Illustrated. Whether Ronaldo starts again, and how many minutes Postecoglou gives him as his match fitness builds, will provide the next real data point on how the manager plans to use his most decorated player through the rest of the season.
