Maintaining and cleaning your golf clubs regularly is the best way to make them last and allow you to save money on unnecessary grip changes. Cleaning your grips will also help you get the most out of your game.

Just as you clean each clubface and clubhead in your set of clubs from the buildup of dirt, grass and sand they accumulate throughout a round of golf, it is equally as important to maintain your golf club grips because of the buildup of sweat, sunscreen and oils they attract as you touch them on each swing.

On the golf course, clean golf clubs can instantly make you a slightly better golfer by giving the golf ball a more smooth clubface surface. Dirty grips, and dirty golf clubs in general, also make you look less professional.

According to Golf Pride, here are the five things you will need to clean golf grips:

  • Bucket or sink
  • Soft scrub brush or clean sponge (something like an old toothbrush will also work)
  • Mild dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Towel

1. Combine Soap and Water

Take your dish soap and warm water, and combine the two in a bucket or sink, creating a soapy water mixture

2. Scrub the Grip

Once your clubs are out of your golf bag and ready to be cleaned, start by taking your soft-bristled brush, soaked in the soapy water, and scrubbing the golf grip from top to bottom

3. Rinse off

Using warm, non-soapy water, rinse down the grip thoroughly to remove any soapy residue and remaining grime.

4. Dry the Grip

Using a clean, dry towel or dry cloth, wipe down the grip until it is dry. Then, set the golf club out to air dry.

Repeat on all Clubs with Rubber Grips

Golf club cleaning is vital to your success on the course- so be sure to regularly use this method to regularly clean old grips and all of your other golf equipment.
