What Can I Place Under a Treadmill to Stop Noise?

Treadmills make noise because of the moving belt and the running motor. You can minimize these noises by placing a treadmill mat under your machine. Department stores with a fitness section and treadmill specialty stores sell treadmill mats, which not only reduce noise but also protect your floor.

Sizing Your Mat

Treadmill mats are often made of black rubber, but they can also be made of PVC or foam. Treadmill mats come in different sizes. Select a size that allows the feet of your machine to sit securely on the mat with a little extra around the edges. Don't get a mat so large that it sticks out and creates a tripping hazard. A thin mat may not reduce noise very well and won't protect your floor as well as a thicker mat.

Noise Reduction

Treadmills vibrate from the power of the motor, the movement of the belt and the impact of the user. A treadmill mat will help reduce the vibration and noise of your treadmill by absorbing these sounds. Bark rubber and foam mats do the best job of muting treadmill noises.

Other Benefits

Treadmill mats offer other benefits besides reducing treadmill noise. Horizon Fitness recommends using a treadmill mat to reduce static electricity that transfers from your carpet to your treadmill. Having a mat makes it easier to clean under and around your treadmill. It also protects your floor by acting as a barrier between the treadmill legs and your flooring.


If you place a treadmill mat under your machine and it still produces a lot of noise, the noise may be an indication that there is something wrong with your treadmill. Check for loose nuts or bolts, which can cause excessive rattling sounds. The belt may produce grinding or rubbing sounds if it is not centered or needs lubrication. Contact your treadmill manufacturer for troubleshooting tips if the noise is excessive and the treadmill mat doesn't help.
