Madring F1 Circuit Explained: 22 Turns and 24% Banking

Formula 1 returns to Madrid this weekend, September 11 to 13, for the sport's first race in the Spanish capital in more than 45 years, according to MADRING. The venue is brand new: a 5.4-kilometre, 22-corner circuit built in the city's Valdebebas district for the Spanish Grand Prix Madring debut.

One corner will dominate the broadcast all weekend regardless of how the race unfolds. Turn 12, the Madring La Monumental corner, is a 550-metre bend banked at 24%, the longest corner on the current calendar. Pirelli told Motor Sport Magazine that La Monumental generates the calendar's highest vertical load, a product of both its length and its banking, Motor Sport Magazine reports.

What is the Madring F1 circuit?

Madring is a 5.4-kilometre, 22-corner semi-urban circuit in Madrid's Valdebebas district. It hosts the FORMULA 1 TAG HEUER GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA as round 16 of the 2026 season, running immediately after Imola, according to MADRING.

It's also the first new circuit to join the F1 calendar since Las Vegas arrived in 2023. Construction began on April 25, 2025, led by the joint venture UTE Circuito Madrid, made up of ACCIONA (60%) and Eiffage Construcción (40%), per MADRING. That means construction began roughly 17 months before this weekend's debut, Motor Sport Magazine notes.

Spain's 2026 calendar carries two rounds this year, not one. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya hosted its race in June, and Madring is a separate Madrid Formula 1 circuit weekend rather than a replacement, MADRING confirms. This is the new venue, not a rebrand of an existing Spanish track.

The Madring circuit layout: the corners that matter

The lap opens with a 589-metre start-finish straight, where cars reach speeds in excess of 320km/h before a roughly 200-metre run to Turn 1, one of the layout's clearest early passing opportunities, MADRING says.

From there the lap moves into the circuit's only urban stretch, along Ribera del Sena Street, before opening onto the longest straight on the track at 1.3 kilometres, where cars again exceed 300km/h. Named corners along the way include Turn 3, "Hortaleza," a fast right-hander tied to the visible Madrid neighborhood behind it, and Turn 8, "El Bunker," named for the nearby La Mata Espesa fortifications built during the Spanish Civil War, per MADRING and Motor Sport Magazine.

After La Monumental comes heavy braking into Turn 13, where speeds drop from over 300km/h to roughly 140km/h. Drivers then string together a rapid sequence through Turns 14, 15 and 16, taken almost flat out, with the pelouse fan area sitting between 14 and 15, before another heavy braking zone at Turn 17, where speeds fall from about 280km/h to around 100km/h, according to MADRING's circuit preview.

MADRING's own preview material identifies Turn 1 and Turn 17 as clear overtaking points on this layout. Between those conventional braking zones sits the one corner built purely for spectacle.

How steep is Madring's 24% banking?

The numbers behind La Monumental are worth knowing before the cameras cut to it all weekend. It's a 550-metre, semicircular corner banked at 24%, or roughly 13.5 degrees, rising to 10 metres at its highest point and wrapped by a grandstand built for 45,000 spectators, per MADRING and Motor Sport Magazine.

That Madring 24% banking figure wasn't chosen for drama. Circuit COO Carlos Jimenez has said it was a deliberate safety ceiling, and design firm Dromo tested multiple materially different configurations before settling on the final sequence, Motor Sport Magazine reports. An earlier concept treated the banking as a fast continuation of the preceding straight. The version actually built reshapes the approach, including a roughly 12 to 13 metre descent from the upper roundabout near the fort down through the Valdebebas escarpment, specifically to manage entry speed while preserving what Dromo called a "high-value braking event" immediately after the corner, per the same report.

Building it was its own challenge. Paving La Monumental required more than 1,800 cubic metres of asphalt, mixed at close to 170 degrees Celsius and laid within a roughly 30-minute application window using two synchronized pavers, a process MADRING called the hardest technical task of the entire build, according to MADRING.

Carlos Sainz got a first-hand feel for the corner when he drove the fully asphalted layout on May 18, ahead of the planned May 31 FIA handover, per MADRING. He described La Monumental as the most surprising part of the lap, calling it blind as well as steeply banked. "All you can see is the sky," he said of the approach into the braking zone, per the same MADRING release. Sainz also noted the circuit ran faster than it looked overall, comparing certain sections to Spa-Francorchamps and Silverstone.

Why the Madring La Monumental corner is unique, and why it may not decide the race

The engineering backs up the spectacle. Pirelli told Motor Sport Magazine that La Monumental generates the highest vertical load of any corner on the 2026 calendar. That load is part of why the circuit ranks among the five most physically demanding on tyres for overall energy, with lateral forces in a similar range to Barcelona and Silverstone, per Motor Sport Magazine.

Sainz, who is also Madring's ambassador, expects drivers to take the corner flat out. His own read is that it functions less as a passing zone in its own right and more as a launch point into the tight left that follows. "My feeling is the corner is going to be flat out the whole way and it's going to create an overtaking opportunity into the next tight left," he said, per Motor Sport Magazine.

There's an energy-management wrinkle worth understanding. Madring has two designated overtake-mode activation zones, on the main straight and between Turns 3 and 4, and Monumental isn't one of them. How much power a car carries through the corner, and how much it has left for the straight that follows, comes down to how each team chooses to manage deployment over the lap, per the same report.

Fernando Alonso raised exactly that trade-off on Thursday. "I think for us we will not have the energy available to do La Monumental with the energy on. So, yes, probably someone can overtake us into 13," he said, according to Motor Sport Magazine. It's a specific, self-diagnosed vulnerability rather than a forecast about the field generally, and it matches what Sainz described: Monumental setting up the move rather than being the move itself.

The corner's lack of a designated activation zone does not reduce its significance as a technical and visual feature. Taking 550 metres of 24% banking close to flat for roughly six seconds is unlike anything the current grid has experienced elsewhere on the calendar, per Motor Sport Magazine. Combining that account with MADRING's own circuit preview leaves three potential overtaking points beyond the banking itself: Turn 1 off the 589-metre straight, Turn 13 immediately after Monumental, and Turn 17 later in the lap.

That distinction is worth keeping in mind through practice and qualifying, since the corner everyone will be discussing by Sunday night may not be where the race is actually decided.

Practice and qualifying should show whether teams can carry enough energy through Monumental to defend into Turn 13.
