How to Fix a Slippery Yoga Mat
A yoga mat’s main purpose is to provide you with a comfortable cushion on a floor. It also gives your feet and hands the necessary traction that you need to perform your exercises effectively. When not taken care of properly, your yoga mat can accumulate dust, dead insects and other particulate matter, and this can make the mat slippery. To avoid injuring yourself due to a slippery mat, follow these suggestions.
Wipe your yoga mat with a damp cloth and a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. After wiping, let your mat dry for three hours before using it again.
Store your yoga mat in an airtight bag or large container. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface, which is the most common cause of a slippery mat.
Wash your yoga mat in a washing machine with high-quality detergent using the hot water settings. The constant spinning of your washing machine, combined with the hot water and soap, will stretch your mat, making it thinner and less slippery. Make sure to air-dry it; do not put your yoga mat in the dryer, as this will cause it to shrink.
Spray rubbing alcohol on your yoga mat. Pour some rubbing alcohol into a small spray bottle and spray your mat liberally. Let it dry for an hour before using it. The alcohol hardens the tiny ridges on the mat, giving you a better grip and less of that slippery feeling.
Roll up your yoga mat and soak it in a large basin filled with water and a cup of apple cider vinegar for one hour. The high acidity of the vinegar will shrink the surface compounds of your yoga mat, making it feel rugged. Apple cider vinegar will also kill the germs on the surface.
