How to Make Easy Pom Poms for Cheerleading

You don’t have to be on the varsity cheerleading squad to cheer enthusiastically for your favorite sports team. Throw together a pair of quick, inexpensive pom-poms in your preferred colors for a football party, a Halloween costume or for a child who simply wants to play pretend. These pom-poms can be made using mostly household materials and can be customized to suit your needs.

Clasp the end of the ribbon string in your hand. With your elbow bent, wrap the remainder of the ribbon spool down; catch it beneath your elbow as though winding up a long electrical cord, and guide it back up to your hand to complete a full wrap. Continue to wrap until you’ve completed approximately 50 wraps.

Slide the collection of ribbon loops off your arm gently, keeping them gathered together at the top. Cut through all 50 loops at the top, separating the loops into individual segments.

Thread the ribbons through the jelly bracelet so that the bracelet hits the ribbons at their midpoint and the ends of the ribbons are even on either side. Use a rubber band to secure the ribbons where they meet the bracelet so that they do not fall off or slide out of position.

Cut two rectangular pieces of cardboard. Make each piece 1 inch wide and about a 1/4 inch longer than the jelly bracelet. Layer them on top of one another, then stretch the jelly bracelet around both lengthwise; the point of the bracelet with the ribbons should hit one of the short ends of the cardboard.

Cover the handle -- the cardboard, bracelet and rubber band holding the ribbons -- with electrical tape. Attach the tape to the bottom of the handle and wrap it diagonally up then down the handle. Be sure to cover the bottom of the handle.

Use two colors of ribbon to match your favorite team’s official colors. Use different textures or widths of ribbon for added dimension in a single-colored pom-pom. Find colored electrical tape to match your pom-pom’s colors.
