A few track events involve both sprinting and jumping. The hurdles mix running with jumping at sprint distances. Indoor hurdle events are shorter than 100 meters. Outdoor hurdle events are longer sprints -- the men compete at 110 meters and 400 meters and the women compete at 100 meters and 400 meters. The other events that require both sprinting and jumping are the triple jump, broad jump and pole vault. Certain shoes are specifically made for hurdlers, sprinters and jumpers.

Great hurdlers must be versatile enough to run in a fast and rhythmic pattern that will enable them to feel that they are sprinting over the barriers rather than jumping over the 42-inch hurdles. Ideally, your center of gravity should lift only a little when you clear the hurdles. Two shoe models in 2011 that were specifically designed for hurdlers are the Adidas Edge Arriba 2M and the Asics Hyper MD.

Other Sprinter Jumpers

Shoes have also been specifically designed for the other sports that require sprinting and jumping. The Asics Turbo Jump Spike is aimed at top long jumpers, triple jumpers and pole vaulters. The Adidas AdiZero LJ is even more specialized, designed for elite long jumpers who run flat out before a solid plant on the board before lift-off.

Good shoes for sprinters are lightweight, with a spike pattern that is conducive to a a transfer of force that maximizes your speed. Two models in 2011 were designed for the elite sprinters who run 100 meter to 400 meter races. The Nike Zoom Ja features a plate with eight spikes. The Adidas Demolisher has a plate with six spikes. The Mizuno Tokyo for women is designed for races from 50 meters to 400 meters. If you are competing in an event where you have to sprint and jump, you are better off with sprint shoes than jumping shoes, which will be too heavy for the sprinting portion of the event.

Many models of track shoes are unisex. The general guideline for women is to deduct 1 inch or 1 1/2 inches from the men's size to find an appropriate fit. Since this is only a general guideline, women will want to ensure they can return shoes if the shoes don't fit properly.
