Assembly Instructions for a Schwinn Bicycle

Remove the bicycle parts from the carton. Make sure all the parts are included by checking the parts in the carton with the parts listed in the instructions. Lubricate all moving parts before assembly.

Loosen the handlebar stem wedge Allen key bolt using the 6mm Allen key wrench. Place the handlebar stem in the head tube. Tighten the stem bolt. Make sure the handlebar and forks face forward. Loosen the 6mm binder bolt. Rotate the handlebars so the levers are below the level of the handlebar. Re-tighten the 6mm binder bolt.

Confirm that the stem is already assembled on the bicycle. Remove the stem cap and insert the handlebars. Tighten the stem cap bolts to equal tightness.

Tighten all bolts holding the bar ends, brake levers and shifters with a Phillips head screwdriver or a 5mm Allen key.

Rotate the fork to check for smoothness and tightness. Readjust if needed until rotation is smooth. Do not try to disassemble a suspension fork; instead, take it to someone who repairs bikes professionally.

Insert the tapered end of the seat post into the seat clamp. Tighten the nuts partially, but make sure the seat can still turn. Insert the seat assembly into the bicycle frame. Adjust the seat to the correct height. Tighten the binder bolt or adjusting nut securely. Push the front of the seat up and down until the serrations are completely meshed. Tighten the seat clamps.

Check the pedals for designations of "right" and "left." Screw the pedal spindles onto the bicycle by hand, taking care not to strip the threading. Attach the right pedal to the chain side crank arm, screwing it on clockwise. Attach the left pedal to the crank arm on the other side, screwing it on counterclockwise. Tighten the spindle nuts with a 14mm socket wrench.

Insert the front wheel into the fork. Tighten the nuts with a 14mm wrench. The brakes should already be partially assembled. For a V-brake, insert the front V-brake into the frame mounting boss and secure it with the appropriate bolt. Adjust the brake shoe balance and tighten the shoe fixing nut. Run the brake cable through the inner cable lead and adjust the balance. Check the brakes before riding the bicycle.

Inspect the rear derailleur by adjusting the high limit and low limit screws and shifting through all the gears, fine tuning to make sure all gears shift smoothly. For the front derailleur, shift both shifters to their smallest number and place the chain on the appropriate chainwheel and cog. Adjust the high limit and low limit screws, shifting through every gear and making sure the chain doesn't fall off.
